01 · WHAT IS AMC 8

What is the AMC 8?

The AMC 8 (American Mathematics Competitions 8) is an official competition run by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) for students in grade 8 and below. It consists of 25 multiple-choice questions solved in 40 minutes, with no penalty for wrong answers.

It is not a school test. The AMC 8 measures problem solving — the ability to interpret an unfamiliar situation mathematically — rather than memorized procedures. Speed and accuracy matter, but strategy and careful reading matter more.

Most importantly, the AMC 8 is the entry point to the AMC 10/12 → AIME → Olympiad track. Scores from the later stages of this track carry real weight: top universities such as MIT provide a dedicated field for AMC/AIME results on their applications.

The AMC 8 score itself is not submitted to colleges. But nearly every student who scores well on AMC 10/12 in high school began training their competition thinking at the AMC 8 stage. Starting early is the advantage.

Scoring and awards

Each question is worth 1 point, for a maximum of 25. Awards are based on national percentile rather than a fixed cutoff.

Because cutoffs shift with each year's difficulty, the right goal isn't a specific score — it's a percentile. Train for the top 5%, not for "20 points."

03 · REGISTRATION

When and how to register

The AMC 8 is held every January. Students don't register individually — they take the exam through their school or an MAA-approved competition center, and it is offered in many countries around the world, not only in the United States.

If your child's school offers the AMC

Ask the math department whether they administer the AMC 8 and when their internal sign-up deadline is. This is the simplest route.

If the school doesn't offer it

Search the MAA website for an approved competition center near you. Many tutoring centers and academies serve as official test sites, and in most major cities there is one within reach.

Registration typically closes several weeks before the exam date. Check in early fall so you're not scrambling in December.

04 · ROADMAP

A grade-by-grade preparation roadmap

G4–5

Exploration. Build rock-solid fundamentals — fractions, ratios, basic geometry — while getting light exposure to the first 10 questions of past exams. Strong young students can sit the exam early and aim for the Achievement Roll as a confidence-building experience.

Foundation. Begin number theory basics (divisibility, remainders), counting, and deeper geometry. Take one full past exam under timed conditions to diagnose where your child stands, and make word-problem reading a weekly routine.

Competition mode. Work through the last ten years of past exams by topic. Train specifically on questions 21–25 — the hard tail that separates Honor Roll from the middle of the pack — and run repeated timed mocks.

Transition. The final AMC 8 attempt and year one of AMC 10 prep. Finish strong on AMC 8 while shifting toward the heavier algebra content of the AMC 10 curriculum.

Frequently asked questions

What grade should my child start preparing?

Serious preparation typically starts around grade 6, but children who enjoy math benefit from light exposure in grades 4–5 — it removes the intimidation factor. Starting by grade 7 at the latest keeps the Honor Roll within realistic reach.

My child is ahead in school math. Is that enough?

It's a strong start, but not the whole picture. School acceleration builds algebra and arithmetic, while the AMC 8 also draws heavily on counting, number theory, and non-routine problems that most school curricula barely touch. Those areas need dedicated training.

How is this different from self-study platforms?
